World Land Trust - Rainforest Conservation in Action

  • World Land Trust - Rainforest Conservation in Action The World Land Trust is an international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save rainforest and other important wildlife habitats. We buy it, acre by acre. The WLT differs from most other conservation charities in that the Trust doesn’t own the land it saves: It emphasises the importance of supporting local conservation groups and always works through these local partners.

Saved: 375,000 acres of threatened wildlife habitats

Since its foundation in 1989, the World Land Trust and its supporters have saved over 375,000 acres of habitats rich in wildlife, in Asia, Central and South America and the UK. Please help us save even more.

Mission and operation

The Trust’s mission is to protect and sustainably manage natural ecosystems of the world. To conserve their biodiversity, to develop partnerships with local individuals, communities and organisations to engage support and commitment among the people who live in project areas and to raise awareness of the need for conservation, to improve understanding and generate support.

The WLT believes too many organisations ignore the opinions of local NGOs. Instead of putting its own staff in charge of operations, the WLT empowers local NGOs by providing finance for land purchase.

The World Land Trust’s website lists the Trust’s current priority projects that you can support. These include the Carbon Balanced Programme, which meets the challenge of climate change through projects that both offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and conserve biodiversity. Carbon Balanced enables individuals and companies to calculate and offset emissions by supporting the WLT’s restoration ecology projects.
